Elvira Moore Younger JohnsOn May 20, in the quiet of the evening, surrounded by family, God called home His child, Elvira Moore Younger Johns. Elvira, affectionately known as “Vinnie” was born Oct. 29, 1935 to her late parents, Alonzo Moore Sr. and Sallie Ann Yuille Moore.

She was one of 15 children. She was raised in a God-fearing home filled with love and respect. Music and singing were a large part of their lives. She was baptized at the age of 12 and became a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church. She was educated and graduated from Campbell County High School.

On Dec. 17,1955 she married Earnest Younger and they became the parents to Priscilla, Brenda, and Ernest Everette. She loved her children and grandchildren dearly and lived her life as an example of God’s Holy Word.

Elvira worked as a dental technician for 40-plus years and retired from this work. She loved singing all her life. She, along with her sisters, Marcell, Lizzie, Vandelia and Louise were known as, “The Moore Sister’s,” and they sang in the Roanoke area for several years. She was a member of the Senior Choir and Gospel Chorus of Spring Hill Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Martin Luther King Jr. Choir for the Campbell County N.A.A.C.P.

Elvira married Atwood M. Johns in 1986 and became a “Bonus Mother” to Ronald, Wanda, Debbie and Patricia Johns. After the death of her husband, Elvira moved to Williamsburg with her son and became a member of First Corinthians Baptist Church and she also served at Union Baptist Church. Elvira was blessed with the gift of being an encourager and the gift of writing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Atwood; her parents; brothers, Alonzo, Hughes, Rev. Joseph D. Moore and Howard and sisters, Marcell, Vandelia, Ruth, Esther and Parthenia.

She leaves to mourn her passin; two daughters, Priscilla Lacy (Steve) and Rev. Brenda Yuille (Henry); one son, Everette Younger (LaQuetta); grandchildren, Roderick, Jennifer (Aubrey), Catherine, Lawrence, Ashley, Jonathan (Rachel), Joseph, Katrina (a.k.a. Atlas), LaNiya and Kayla; great-grandchildren; Aaliyah and Amiyah; two sisters, Lizzie Robinson and Marylin Louise Randolph (W. Curtis); one brother, Floyd Moore; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Moore and Inez Moore and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 27, at 11 a.m. at Cross Road Baptist Church in Evington, with interment in Springhill Baptist Church in Brookneal.
