Bacon District Elementary School students and their families celebrated family literacy with a special PTO-sponsored event recently.

Those in attendance enjoyed cookies, coffee and hot chocolate in the “Reading Cafe” and were treated to a special presentation by Author Francis Wood, according to a press release from the school.

According to Principal Sylvia Lockett, “our goal for this event was to engage with outside resources to make learning about reading and writing a community effort. Mr. Wood’s presentation was inspirational and amusing for our families.”

Wood, an award-winning author and the voice of WFLO in Farmville, shares his love of reading and writing with students throughout the area.  “He encourages them to be imaginative, record their thoughts and feelings and develop crucial literacy skills in a way that is enjoyable and self-fulfilling.”

Wood entertained students and parents with stories of his own adventures, according to the press release.
