Faster internet could soon be a reality for those in rural Charlotte County, thanks to RiverStreet.

On April 27, the Wilkesboro, North Carolina based broadband service provider kicked off construction with a groundbreaking ceremony at the Charlotte Court House Volunteer Fire Department.

According to a release from RiverStreet, when the project is completed, over 4,100 homes and businesses across the county will have access to Internet speeds up to 1,000 Megabits per second, also known as 1 Gig. Now to be clear, don’t expected that immediately. The full project could take several years to complete.

“We are excited to offer more homes and businesses in Virginia the opportunity to get ultra-high-speed Internet with excellent customer service at competitive rates,” said President and CEO of RiverStreet Eric Cramer.

Cramer said with the assistance of funding from Charlotte County, the Connect America Fund (CAF), the Virginia Telecommunication Initiative (VATI), and the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF), the network expansion supported by RiverStreet is expected to be completed over the next few years.

“Today – at home, at work, at school, and in government – we all depend on the Internet to power our lives,” Cramer said. “Investing in broadband and fiber networks is an investment in our rural communities, helping to create the best possible future for all of us.”

According to Riverstreet in the near future residents and businesses in Charlotte County will receive further information about what to expect during the construction process and how to sign up for service.
