U.S. 15 North and VA 47 North in Charlotte County and VA 92 North in Halifax County remained closed Wednesday due to downed power lines.

In addition, approximately 50 secondary routes are closed by either downed trees, power lines, or flooding.

According to the district’s Assistant District Administrator for Maintenance Gerry Harter, P.E., “VDOT and its contractors are working diligently and coordinating efforts with utility providers to reopen roads as quickly as possible. Once weather permits and roads are open, clean-up on VDOT right of way will begin, and this effort is expected to be lengthy and multi-phased.”

VDOT Communications Manager Paula K. Jones said crews have been working in miserable and dangerous conditions.

“We were fortunate to have no serious injuries,” Jones said.

Jones said Charlotte County received a significant amount of ice and, as a result, tree damage, which will take time to clean up.

On Tuesday, Feb. 15, God’s Pit Crew out of Danville was dispatched to the area and will spend two weeks helping to clear debris.

Currently, VDOT is pretreating major routes and checking equipment and materials to respond to the next major weather event expected to hit the area late Wednesday into Thursday.

Charlotte is sitting in the path to receive yet another wallop of ice.
