A long-awaited sidewalk project in the Town of Charlotte Court House will begin in February following the awarding of a VDOT funded grant.

The Charlotte Court House Evergreen Sidewalk Project involves the construction of 2,183 linear feet of sidewalk along the eastern side of Evergreen Road, beginning at the Randolph-Henry High School parking lot and extending to Gold Leaf Drive in the Town of Charlotte Court House.

According to Executive Director Melody Foster with the Commonwealth  Regional Council (CRC) The CRC assisted the Town of Charlotte Court House in applying for and receiving the VDOT Transportation Set- Aside Grant in 2017. “As a part of the grant-funded project, the CRC is providing Grant Administration services,” said Foster.

The total current project budget is $675,000. The Town will provide a 20% local match toward the VDOT grant-funded project.

According to Foster, the sidewalk project is expected to be completed by May 30.

“This new sidewalk will provide another safe walking space in a part of town that does not have one,” said Charlotte Court House Mayor David Watkins Jr. “It is a long-range plan of the town to try and provide these safe spaces along the roads in the town as funds become available.”

The CRC covers the counties of Amelia, Buckingham, Charlotte, Lunenburg and Prince Edward and provides planning services to localities including free grant writing, grant administration, updates or creation of comprehensive plans, emergency planning and environmental planning.
