With the Cullen/Red House District Supervisor seat now vacant, supervisors, during a special called meeting Thursday, unanimously voted to seek a replacement by advertising for those who are interested to submit a written letter of interest for consideration.

According to County Attorney, Russell Slayton, the board has until July 1 to fill the position left open by the resignation of Dr. Nancy Carwile. Carwile’s term expires in December.

Wylliesburg/Red Oak District Supervisor Kay Pierantoni made a motion, seconded by Supervisor Donna Fore to advertise and seek qualified candidates to submit their interest in the Cullen/Red House seat.

Pierantoni pointed out during the meeting that other counties have advertised when seats became vacant and that people have come forward who what to serve and then the board has considered those. “I think that’s a fair way to go about it.” said Pierantoni.

Aspen/Phenix District Supervisor Donna Fore also spoke up to add that she too felt it was a “more fair and equitable way to do a nomination and selection of a candidate.”

In advertising for an individual to fill the unexpired term, Supervisor Gary Walker noted that he would like the board to consider placing in the ad that they prefer someone not be a candidate

or election for the position which will be held Nov. 5.

“I would like to see us put in that we prefer somebody that does not want to run in November, so we don’t have the appearance of the old boy network, which includes some ladies now, making the decision for the people when the people have an opportunity to speak,” Walker said.

Supervisor Carwile had proposed that David Moore, who held the seat before her be appointed to fill the vacancy. Carwile served on the board of supervisors for 16 years and Moore served for 20 years.

The board of supervisors will advertise seeking letters of interest from individuals who are wishing to fill the Cullen/Red House District seat and prefer that the person appointed to the seat not be a candidate for election for the position, which will be held Nov. 5.

The deadline for filing as a candidate on the November ballot is June 11.

Those who live in the district and have an interest in being considered for appointment to fill the remaining term, which expires in December should deliver their written statement, no longer than one page in length, to the office of the Charlotte County Administrator located at 250 LeGrande Avenue, Suite A, Charlotte Court House, VA or by email to County Administrator, Daniel Witt at dwitt@charlottecountyva.gov.

The deadline for submitting letters of interest is June 21. The board of supervisors will hold a closed meeting on June 26, at 9 a.m. to discuss the letters of interest. Following the closed session, the board will convene in open session to make an appointment to fill the Cullen/Red House seat.
