Randolph Henry High School’s junior varsity girls basketball team concluded its season Feb. 6 with a 17-7 home loss to Central Lunenburg.

The Lady Statesmen finished the season with a 1-17 overall record, defeating visiting Bluestone 17-9 on Dec. 2.

“If you were to look at the win-loss record, one might say it was not a very good year but when in fact it was a very successful season for these ladies,” Randolph-Henry Head Coach Sandy Mayhew said. “Success doesn’t always come on the scoreboard and these ladies found success in many areas of the game. The huge strides this team made was remarkable considering we had only six players and for a couple of games were down to five.”

Mayhew noted that three of the six players had never played the sport before and had to learn it from the start.

“This did not deter this team, and they fought each game (until) the final buzzer sounded,” she said. “We were actually very close in numerous games this year to pulling off several wins, but could not seal the victory.”

In a 25-21 home loss to Buckingham on Jan. 31, Anisha Marable had her best game and led the scoring with 15 points, including three three-pointers, and had five steals.

In a 38-16 road loss to Nottoway on Feb. 3, the Lady Statesmen produced a great defensive effort.

“Overall, this season has been one of rebuilding and teaching the basics of basketball,” Mayhew said. “But the season showed vast improvement and growth in the team, especially on the defensive side of the game.”
