Confidence. There is a difference between confidence and arrogance. There is a difference between being confident and just being cocky. Confidence carries a humble truth. Arrogance and cockiness most often simply carry hot air with no support. George Foreman is one of the greatest boxers to ever step into the ring. He wrote: “When I was a boxer in the 1970’s, I was punched in the face by Joe Frazier, knocked out by Muhammed Ali, and knocked down a few times by Ron Lyle before I got back up and won. All the fights had one thing in common: when they were over, I couldn’t remember the pain. I forgot about my weak knees, the cuts, the blood in my eyes.
Without the films of my fights, I would have completely taken them out of my mind. It’s the same thing when you’re going through tough times: Don’t let pain and disappointment lodge inside.”
That, ladies and gentlemen, is confidence. George Foreman also says that knowing Jesus is more important than fame. After retiring from boxing, Foreman planted a church in Houston, Texas. He loves, more than anything, to tell folks about “fighting the good fight”. No, he isn’t referring to boxing here…he’s referring to living a life for Christ. The confidence George Edward Foreman has isn’t from being a two time heavyweight champion of the world.
His confidence isn’t from having 76 wins (68 of which were by knockout) and only 5 loses. His confidence comes from a saving personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
Confidence. Confidence is feeling so sure of yourself and your abilities that you don’t become arrogant. Confidence isn’t feeling superior to others. It’s a beautiful, calm, quiet, inner ability in knowing you’re more than capable.
Confidence is believing all things are possible for the good of those who live in God and live according to His plan and purpose. Even when getting knocked down…you get back up.
Confidence. Now, this isn’t a “should I try to pass gas” after having an upset stomach feeling I’m talking about. Confidence is removing any doubt in ourselves as we totally rely on God to do His thing in and through us. We are not confident of our own talents and abilities…we are confident like the apostle Paul who wrote the Philippian church these words: “I am confident of this, that the One who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6).” Build your confidence. Get active in worship and in helping in your church family. Get plugged in with a church family where you will be fed and cared for. Boost your confidence!
