Ernest Ray Hunter, of Halifax, passed away Saturday, July 9, at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born Nov. 10, 1936 in Prince Edward County and was 85 years old. He was the son of the late Ernest G. Hunter and the late Ora Fox Hunter and was married to Jean Keller Hunter, who survives.

He was a faithful member of Beth Car Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, and a Sunday school teacher. Ray retired from VDOT as a maintenance supervisor after many years of dedicated service, but not being one to stay idle, shortly after his retirement he went to work with VIR for several years. Ray also loved getting out and playing a round of golf.

Ernest Ray Hunter is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jean Keller Hunter of the home; his children, Brenda Snead Nelson (Brad) of Summerville, South Carolina, Joyce Hunter Chappell (Mike) of Salisbury, North Carolina and Michael Ray Hunter of Halifax; five grandchildren, Nat Snead (Laura), Rebecca Francis (Patrick), Jon Chappell (Alysha), Patrick Hunter, Michelle Hunter and Catlin Rickman and two great grandchildren, Beau and Asher Chappell.

He was preceded in death by, one sister, Velma Shaw and daughter-in-law, Patty H. Hunter.

A memorial service will be held Friday, July 15, at 2 p.m., at Beth Car Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Mike Parnell and Rev. Reggie Warren officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Beth Car Baptist Church.
