High-class music is coming to South Boston, on Saturday, April 30, in an afternoon show designed for children and an evening show for all ages.
Opera on the James, based in Lynchburg, will perform the 40-minute “Billy Goats Gruff” at 3 p.m. at The Prizery, featuring music from operas by Mozart, Donizetti and Rossini. It is designed for children up to 10 years old. The story revolves around an after-school game of hide and seek by three billy-goat friends, who are blocked by a bully from going home. Rather than become violent, the billy goats find a way to turn the bully into a new friend.
The “Festival of Melody,” at 7 p.m., is a mix of opera, Broadway, film and other genres performed by young professional opera singers. They are part of the Tyler Young Artists program for performers in residence for four weeks. They’re described by the opera company as “the cream of the crop in the vocal world: up-and-coming stars of the future in residence right here in our community.”
Tickets are available at prizery.org/tickets or by calling (434) 572-8339.
