A Virginia State Police (VSP) trooper from Charlotte County was arrested Thursday, Feb. 4, after having been charged with three felony counts of sexual assault.
A VSP release stated Derrick A. Thompson, of Drakes Branch, was arrested Thursday on three indictments from a Charlotte County grand jury.
Thompson has been charged with one felony count of rape, one felony count of sodomy and one felony count of object sexual penetration.
The charges stem from an investigation into an incident reported to state police in September 2020. The investigation was initiated by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Richmond Field Office
Thompson was taken into custody without incident and is being held at the New River Regional Jail without bond.
“Upon his arrest, state police suspended Thompson without pay pending the outcome of the judicial process,” VSP Public Relations Director Corinne N. Geller said in the release. “Thompson was hired in October 2007 and has been assigned to the Area 23 Office, which encompasses Charlotte and Halifax counties, since August 2011.”
