Ellen Louise Bowman Carroll was born Sept. 30, 1932, in Coalwood, West Virginia, to Mary Elizabeth Faris Bowman and Walter R. Bowman. She left this world quietly on the evening of Thursday, Nov. 12. Family had just been by her bedside to read and talk to her knowing that hearing is the last sense at the end. She had been living at Paul Springs Retirement Community in Alexandria and died in her own bed. There were no complications or COVID, she just decided she was done. She had made her peace and as a Jehovah’s Witness her faith was strong. Ellen had two brothers, Bobby Ray Bowman (deceased) and Charles Herbert Bowman (Deceased). They lived in a West Virginia coal camp until 1943, when the family moved to the family farm in Meherrin. Ellen then moved up to Alexandria, where she started with the US Post Office. She and Otey Carroll then moved back to the farm and she became the Post Master of Meherrin. After the death of Otey and Mary Lou she moved back to Alexandria to be close to both sons. Ellen was mother to Mary Louise Bolick (deceased), James Henry Bolick, Jr. (deceased), Johnny Ray Bolick (wife Laura Nelson Bolick) and Eva Marie Carroll Edwards (husband John David Edwards). Her grandchildren are: Crystal Yvonne Bolick Hamby (husband Matthew Hamby), Angel Marie Bolick Smith (husband Brent Smith), Walter Ray Bolick, Nathaniel Lewis Edwards and Kaitlyn Elisabeth Edwards. She has several great-grandchildren: Christopher Tyler Triplett, Madelaine Louise Hamby, Ruth Ellen Hamby, Madeline Louise Bolick and Dominic Bolick. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 18 at the Meherrin Methodist Church Cemetery. Viewing was held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 17 at the Browning-Duffer Funeral Home 110 H Street, Keysville, VA 23947. The Family will be receiving friends at the farm, 2025 Freestate Road, Meherrin, VA.
