Senator Frank Ruff and Delegate James Edmunds announced Thursday, June 25 that Comcast will begin a network expansion project this year to extend broadband service to more than 775 addresses in Brookneal.

In addition to gigabit internet service, residential customers in the county will have access to all Xfinity services including network speeds up to 100 gigabits-per-second. Comcast expects the first of these new services to be available by the end of the year.

“It is great to hear that Comcast is expanding broadband in the Brookneal area,” Senator Frank Ruff (R-Mecklenburg Co) said.  “One of the greatest concerns many parents have is the ability to have high speed service in many rural parts of the state.  It is good to have private companies like Comcast better serve our communities.”

Comcast has invested billions of dollars in its Virginia network to meet consumer demand, providing among the fastest, most reliable internet speeds over its fiber-rich network, and one of the fastest in-home WiFi experiences. Comcast will also offer Internet Essentials, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive broadband adoption program, providing low-cost broadband service, digital literacy training and discounted computers.

“I am so pleased to know that Comcast has seen the need for Brookneal and rural Virginia to have access to high speed internet.  This will be very timely as online requirements for school children becomes more and more necessary.  Hopefully other communications companies across Southside Virginia will also recognize the need to help Virginians living in rural areas to have access to high speed internet,” Delegate James Edmunds (R-Halifax Co) said.  “We cannot compete or grow economically without it.  It has become almost as necessary as electricity and it must remain a top priority for every household in rural Virginia to have access to. Thank you to Comcast for filling this gap.”

Similar Comcast expansions are expected in portions of Virginia in the coming months, passing thousands of additional rural addresses. These are the latest in a series of investments Comcast has made over the last few years to extend broadband internet to more than 10,000 addresses in unserved areas of the commonwealth.
