Students in grades K-5 at Bacon District and Phenix Elementary have been participating in the Reading Makes Cents reading program.

This program initiated by the Virginia 529 savings program focuses on personal finance concepts.

In the library, Mrs. Watkins has read books from the Reading Makes Cents reading list that were appropriate for each grade level. In order to qualify to participate, each child listened to five books that dealt with economic concepts such as earning, spending or saving money.

After hearing the five books, each child had to choose his or her favorite and write why it was a favorite.

Parents prior to the beginning of this program were sent a letter explaining the guidelines and qualifications for entering the drawing.

Every child in grades K-5 who submitted a completed challenge form, certified by a parent or guardian, is entered into the drawing to win one of the 14 Invest 529 college savings accounts from Virginia 529 with a contribution of $529. This program is being held throughout the state. Winners will be announced by May 1.

The children have enjoyed the books and activities, as well as learning about economics.
