Randolph-Henry High School’s (R-H) varsity wrestling team was undermanned over the weekend at a tournament in Christiansburg, but the Statesmen still put forth a solid performance in a large field.

At the Big Blue Invitational, the Statesmen placed 17th out of 34 teams from both Virginia and West Virginia.

Sharing how he felt about his team’s placement, Randolph-Henry Head Coach Zack Mowery said that consider the Statesmen were competing “without our three best wrestlers wrestling in this event, I feel great. If we had those three, we would have been top-eight as a team, without a doubt.”

The trio he was referring to included Statesmen senior Danny Parrish, senior Chandler Newcomb and freshman Brycen Arbogast, each of whom did not wrestle due to injury.

Among R-H wrestlers that were active at the event Friday, Jan. 17, and Saturday, Jan. 18, were sophomore 220-pounder Daniel Lara and sophomore 113-pounder Shawn Copeland, each of whom placed 10th.

Randolph-Henry returns to action Thursday, Jan. 23, when it competes in the James River District Tournament at Nottoway High School at 5 p.m.
