Lacks family gathering held

The families of Robert Lynwood Lacks and Lucy Brown Hall met at the Lacks home place for a family gathering on Oct. 19.
Over 125 attendees enjoyed a Brunswick stew, barbecue, hot dogs, hamburgers, fried chicken with sides and a bakery of desserts prepared by family members.
Robert and Lucy Hall Lacks were married on Sept. 14, 1904 at Hebron Methodist Church in Charlotte County, by S. Harvey Johnson. The family purchased the Halifax County farm near the Staunton River and moved from Charlotte County in 1917. The children recalled being frightened as the wagon, loaded with them and the household goods, crossed the Staunton River unsure they would make it safely across without being flooded.
Robert Lynwood Lacks was born Oct. 09, 1882 and died Nov. 22, 1985. He lived to be 103 years old. He was the son of Albert A. Lacks (son of Elizabeth Lacks (daughter of Robin Lacks and Mary “Polly Conner) and Lucinda Newcomb (daughter of Parthenia Russell Newcomb (daughter of Elkanah Newcomb and Harriett Johnson) and John Newcomb (son of John Newcomb and Susanah Wilmouth).
Lucy Brown Hall was born on Dec. 2. 1888 and died on July 21,1967; she was the daughter of Rosa Lena Hall and maternal granddaughter of John William Hall (son of Thomas Hall and Ruthea Newcomb) and Jennie Newcomb (daughter of Joseph Newcomb and Mary F. Johnson)
Adult children of Robert and Lucy Lacks are Rosa Lena Townsend, Rena Brown Williams Conner, Lottie Wallace Lacks, Bessie Myrtle Lacks, Cinda Stover Lacks, Mary Elizabeth Lacks, Eva Virginia Lacks, Dorothy Evelyn Wade, Bertha Alna Womack, Frances Hagood King and Robert Berkley Lacks.
