Fifth grade students at Bacon District and Phenix Elementary schools have been studying about cells. To extend their learning in the library, Mrs. Watkins has had them working in small groups to do a “mini” research project.

The culminating activity was a guest speaker. Billy Catron, retired Randolph-Henry biology teacher and baseball coach, presented a PowerPoint presentation on cells. Catron had seven stations with microscopes and slides for the students to actually observe and draw the cells that they saw. Some of the stations included a fruit fly, an ameba, onion skin and pond water.

The students enjoyed the hands-on experience and becoming scientists for the hour. Community support is vital to our educational system.
