Randolph-Henry High School’s (R-H) varsity golf team did not win the regular season James River District championship for the first time since 1999, but the Statesmen rebounded to win the district tournament title Monday at Kinderton Country Club by 23 strokes over regular season title holder Central Lunenburg High School.

The Statesmen won the 18-hole tournament with a team score of 326, while the Chargers shot a 349.

“I think we finally peaked,” R-H Head Coach Kelly Powell said of the win. “It took us all year, but we finally peaked. That’s the best we’ve played all year.”

Earning all-district status by placing among the top-12 individual golfers in the tourney were Statesmen juniors Jordan Colbert, Brenden Francisco and Caleb Shook and freshman Austin Queensberry.

On Thursday, Randolph-Henry defeated Nottoway High School 174-204 at Briery Country Club.

Two days prior, R-H took on Central at Lunenburg Country Club to see who the regular season district champion would be. The Chargers won with a 165, while the Statesmen shot a 175. Buckingham County High School placed a distant third with a 214.

“I think it’s just, as they say, home court advantage,” Powell said, noting that each team defeated the other twice while playing on their own home course, and R-H defeated Central at a neutral location Monday.

The rivals face off in a non-district match 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Briery Country Club. Randolph-Henry begins regional play 11 a.m. Monday at Kiskiack Golf Club in Williamsburg.
