“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” This quote has been attributed to Henry Ford, as well as, motivational speaker Tony Robbins. This is a deep thought — ain’t it? Have you ever watched someone try a task and constantly do the same thing over and over and wonder why it isn’t working? Have you struggled in relationships and wondered why there is always arguing or fighting but never being willing to adjust and grow together? In anything we do in life, we can feel trapped in the same ol’ rut.
Several times in the Bible we are challenged to grow. It is hard to grow if you are not willing to make adjustments in order to better yourself and those around you. 2 Peter 3:18 tells, “but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever! Amen.” Grow.
Do you remember when you started growing physically how at times you could have growing pains? Remember how your parents fussed because they just bought you new shoes or pants and you outgrew them in no time? Growing has moments of pain, as well as, irritants. When it comes to our salvation we must never stop striving to grow and learn. As an individual we can’t remain the same we have always been. Have you ever noticed how we don’t mind updating certain items but refuse to update others? For example: Do you still use a wood stove inside your home? How about driving the same car you had back in the day or a newer one? Do you wear the same clothes you wore 15 years ago? I know you don’t have a newer TV in the house, nor do you use that internet stuff, right? Huh. You see adjusting isn’t always bad. We must seek to become better even if it means tweaking our approach. In 1 Peter 2:2-3 we are challenged with, “Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.”
Wanting to grow in your faith? Where are you attending worship? How often are you studying God’s word? How is your prayer life? Wishing your church family could do a little more outreach? Then how are you assisting in this? “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” Maybe it’s time for an adjustment. Lord, help me seek growth. May I never become complacent with myself but always strive to grow deeper in You. In Jesus name, amen.
