Possibly severe storms forecast for afternoon, evening

Thunderstorms, gusty winds and rainfall forecast to potentially total 2 inches are on the forecast for Charlotte County starting Monday afternoon into the evening.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Blacksburg, a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m. is forcast.

High winds are projected, with possible gusts as high as 20 miles per hour, according to NWS.

“Southwest wind 8 to 11 (miles per hour) mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Some storms could be severe Monday evening and produce heavy rainfall, according to the NWS. New precipitation could amount between 1 and 2 inches, according to NWS.

“Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening in response to a strong upper-level low pressure area moving northeast from the Midsouth,” the NWS cited in a hazardous weather alert for the region, which includes Charlotte County. “These storms will be capable of becoming severe and producing large hail, damaging wind gusts, and possibly even a few tornadoes. Locally heavy rainfall leading to minor flooding will also be possible with the stronger and slower moving storms.”

Charlotte County may also see thunderstorms and rainfall forecast until Tuesday afternoon, after which the weather is projected to become more sunny.
