Randolph-Henry High School’s varsity wrestling team placed 15th out of approximately 56 teams at the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 2 state tournament this past weekend in Salem, and leading the Statesmen was junior 170-pounder Danny Parrish, who finished as the state runner-up.
He was part of a trio of Statesmen to place, including senior 182-pounder Layton Payne, who finished eighth, and senior 132-pounder John Wendelin, who placed 10th.
Statesmen Head Coach Zack Mowery said he felt his team’s performance “showed the hard work we have all put in is paying off, becoming one of the top teams in the state.”
“My expectations have been exceeded all year by this team,” he continued. “We will continue to work this offseason and summer and come back looking to jump into the top-five as a team next year, with multiple kids in the state finals.”
Parrish went 3-1 at states, including winning his 100th career match Saturday. He finished the 2018-19 season with an overall record of 34-3.
