The inaugural Rainbow of Ribbons pageant organizer Teresa Dunaway described feeling like “a fish out of water” putting the pageant together.
It was the smiles of the approximately 50 contestants who took part in the Feb. 9 event, and the strong showing of the community that made it worth it.
“All we heard was good things,” Dunaway said, adding modestly, “so I guess we did OK for our first time.”
The pageant was organized to support the Barksdale Cancer Foundation, a Charlotte Court House-based nonprofit that provides support for cancer patients in the area.
The community’s investment in research and support for those with cancer was evident during the pageant. Dunaway said the event raised more than $6,000 in donations.

She said she and others are already getting ready for next year’s pageant, adding a “Baby Miss” class for those 2 years of age and younger.
