Recently, the kindergarten students came to the library and heard an old favorite – “Stone Soup” by Marcia Brown. This book was first published in 1947. It is a story about how three hungry soldiers outwit a village. The villagers did not want to share their food or houses with the soldiers. The soldiers told the villagers that they could make soup from a stone. As the soup was being made, the soldiers told the town’s people that the soup would be so much better with extra ingredients. Soon the people were hurrying to bring items such as cabbages, onions and carrots.

As a culminating activity, librarian Allyson Watkins showed the students a recipe for stone soup and they made it in the library. Each child got to cut up vegetables and put them in a Crock-Pot. All the students had the opportunity to taste the soup. It is refreshing to know that some books never get old.
