Champs for the 19th straight year

Randolph-Henry High School’s (R-H) 2018 varsity golf team will be remembered in part as a squad that helped preserve the program’s remarkable streak of regular season James River District championships, delivering the program’s 19th straight Sept. 11 at Briery Country Club.
The Statesmen saw their 16-year-long district match win streak snapped earlier this season at the hands of Central Lunenburg High School, and R-H Head Coach Kelly Powell noted how dejected his players were then. But they have rebounded remarkably, defeating the Chargers thrice in profoundly competitive matches, including last week’s match that determined which team would claim the regular season crown. The Statesmen shot a 159, edging Central, which finished with a 161.
For the regular season, “the Statesmen were led by senior co-captains Larkin Jackson and Skylar Lacks,” Powell said. “Every match, different team members played well, and we were able to complete our regular season with a 21-1 (overall) record.”
On Sept. 11, Jordan Colbert led Randolph-Henry by shooting a 36. Jackson shot a 40, Matthew Taylor produced a 41, and Lacks and Brenden Francisco each generated 42s.
Powell offered “special appreciation to our players, coaches, parents and everyone that supported the R-H golf team. We look forward to postseason play.”
R-H plays in the district tournament 9 a.m. Wednesday at Kinderton Country Club.
