R-H is regional doubles runner-up

Randolph-Henry High School’s No.1 doubles team of freshman Grace Algeier and senior Annie Sandridge advanced all the way to the Region 2A doubles tournament championship match before falling to a team from Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School.

The doubles tournament, host by Goochland High School on Memorial Day, featured all No. 1-seed doubles teams in the region with the winner advancing to compete at the Virginia High School League Class 2 state tournament to be held at Virginia Tech this weekend.

Algeier and Sandridge, holding the No. 2 seed in the regional tourney, faced No. 7 Brunswick High School’s Genesis Martinez and Shadimon Harrison in the quarterfinals, winning the match 6-0, 6-0. In the semifinals, the Randolph-Henry squad triumphed 6-4, 6-1 against Olivia Garcia and Alexa Woolson of No. 3 Bruton High School.

The championship match pitted Algeier and Sandridge against Anna Soffin and Narmin Rashid of No. 1 Maggie Walker, and Soffin and Rashid won 6-2, 6-0, advancing to the state tournament.

The Region 2A singles tournament was held May 29 in Raintree, and Randolph-Henry was represented by its No. 1 singles player, Algeier. She was the only freshman competing in the tournament of seniors.

Algeier advanced after defeating Bruton’s Helen McCarthy 7-5, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Algeier faced Poquoson High School’s Christina Zalamenda and fell 6-0, 6-0.

Zalamenda came up short in the final, falling 6-1, 6-4 to three-time state champion Soffin, of Maggie Walker.
