Randolph-Henry High School’s No. 2-seeded varsity girls tennis team advanced as far as the semifinals in the Region 2A team tournament before falling 5-2 to No. 3 Poquoson High School on May 23.

“The score does not indicate what an exciting, well-played match by both schools (this was),” Lady Statesmen Head Coach Deborah Laine said.

To reach the semifinals, Randolph-Henry defeated No. 7 Prince Edward County High School 7-2 in the quarterfinals on May 21.

In the Region 2A doubles tournament, Randolph-Henry freshman Grace Algeier and senior Annie Sandridge held the No. 2 seed, topping a No. 7 Brunswick High School team in the quarterfinals and a No. 3 Bruton High School team in the semifinals. Algeier and Sandridge lost in the final to a team from No. 1 Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School.

The singles tourney was set to start Tuesday, featuring Algeier.
