It was a season marked by close finishes for Randolph-Henry High School’s junior varsity boys basketball team, and the Statesmen finished with two big James River District wins.

They defeated visiting Prince Edward 33-25 and then topped host Cumberland 40-39.

Randolph-Henry finished with a 10-10 overall record. It went 9-7 in the district, narrowly placing third behind Buckingham, which went 10-6, and four teams that were tied for first with 11-5 records, including Prince Edward.

Statesmen Head Coach Mark Heintzleman noted his players lacked knowledge of the fundamentals of the game, but they learned quite a bit during the course of the season.

“We learned how to play help defense much better,” he said. “From start to finish, we definitely were a better defensive team.”

He said the victory over Prince Edward illustrated this.

“That was a huge win for us,” he said. “That’s one of my first times beating Prince Edward actually … I think my first time.”one of them for me.”
