Randolph-Henry High School’s varsity boys basketball team split its contests with Goochland High School during the regular season, but the Statesmen dominated the Bulldogs on Monday in the James River District tournament championship game, running away with a 73-55 victory at Prince Edward County High School, which hosted the tourney.

The Statesmen reached the tournament title game by defeating visiting Bluestone High School 75-64 on Saturday in the semifinals.

During the regular season, Randolph-Henry achieved a 57-51 road win over Goochland on Jan. 22, but then the Bulldogs came to Charlotte Court House on Feb. 2 and handed the Statesmen a 46-36 loss, later wrapping up the district regular season title. Randolph-Henry star senior guard/forward Tremaine Pugh was limited in the second Goochland game, still recovering after having contracted the flu.

Following Monday’s title win, Pugh was named the varsity boys basketball 2017-18 James River District Player of the Year.

Randolph-Henry (16-6) will begin play in the Virginia High School League Region 2A tournament Friday. The Statesmen will host a team to be determined.
