The Barksdale Cancer Foundation is gearing up to host its ninth annual handbag bingo event at the Bacon District Volunteer Fire Department in Wylliesburg on March 18.
Tickets are being sold for $20 in advance or $25 at the door, with all proceeds to benefit the foundation in helping local neighbors fight cancer.
Foundation President Wendy Lankford said this year, a few new bags are being added to the lineup made by Liz Soto. Lankford said the bags are vegan leather and made in California.
Other prizes will include brands such as Vera Bradley and “31,” in addition to feature vendors from Scentsy, Avon, Premier and “31.”
The event will also include a variety of door prizes, concessions and side pockets along with the main event.
“We did have the most recipients of grants last year,” said Lankford. She said a total of 33 grants were given during the year to help cancer patients in the county.
“That’s almost $22,000,” she said.
According to information provided by the foundation, the organization was founded in 1999 to help raise money for cancer patients in Charlotte County. The Barksdale Cancer Foundation operates as a nonprofit organization.
The organization was started based on the Barksdale family, of Phenix, losing three family members to cancer in a four-year timespan.
“Seeing the suffering and anguish experienced during these trying years, the family decided it would like to memorialize their loved ones and at the same time help others in Charlotte County who were suffering due to the same illness,” cited information provided by the organization.
In addition to handbag bingo, Lankford said the foundation is adding an additional fundraiser for the upcoming year — a wine festival in October.
“We are quite excited about it,” she said. “(We) have already booked two very popular local bands.”
The handbag bingo event will run from 2-4 p.m. However, doors will open at 1 p.m. Tickets may be purchased from members of the Barksdale Cancer Foundation Board or by contacting Wendy at (434) 470-1538, Pixie at (434) 568-6931 or Kim at (434) 414-5032.
