Panthers earn a weekend sweep

The Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) men’s basketball team captured a pair of wins over the weekend against Virginia Community System foes Thomas Nelson and Germanna.

The two wins improved SVCC, the three-time defending USA National Postgrad champions, to 8-4 on the season.

After falling behind 11-7 early Sunday against Germanna Community College, the Panthers responded with a 28-0 run and never looked back in picking up a 103-69 win.

Issac Edwards came off the bench to knock down three treys and led the team with 22 points and eight rebounds on the day, while Michael Jackson scored 18 points and grabbed seven boards, and Kamron Hughes knocked down 17 points and added 11 rebounds with eight assists.

Justin Williams and Isreal Stith scored 12 points apiece for SVCC, while K.J. Reagans scored 11.

On Saturday afternoon, SVCC jumped out to a big lead and then had to rally late for an 84-74 win over Thomas Nelson Community College.

Reagan’s trey with 40 seconds left gave the Panthers a 78-74 lead, and Williams added two layups late to seal the victory.

The local team got off to a tremendous start behind dunks by Hughes and Williams to jump out to a 15-2 lead at the 14:40 mark of the first half.

Six straight points by Jackson gave SVCC a 38-27 lead, and the Panthers took a 43-31 lead into the halftime break.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Reagans gave SVCC a 58-53 lead at the 11:33 mark of the second half as the Panthers held off Thomas Nelson.

Stith led the local team with 21 points to go with seven rebounds, while Williams scored 17 points and added nine rebounds, and Jackson finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

McClure grabbed 12 rebounds in the game while Reagans finished with 12 points and five boards.

The Panthers host Washington Academy II on Saturday at 3 p.m. and visit Davidson Community College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
