The Charlotte County Volunteer Rescue Squad has been notified that it has been awarded the Rescue Squad Assistance State Funding grant in the amount of $151,815.20 to purchase three monitors/defibrillators and a new 2018 diesel ambulance.

Charlotte County Volunteer Rescue Squad Captain Bill Mayhew said the new monitors will help with cardiac patients.

“We have the older series monitors … they’ve been out for quite a few years, and the ones we’re planning on purchasing are the latest, up-to-date heart monitors, so that will help us with our cardiac patients,” Mayhew said.

He said the rescue squad’s ambulances have had “quite a few breakdowns” over the past year.

“Our ambulances are getting a lot of miles on them, anywhere from 150,000 to 175,000 miles on the majority of them, so we were trying to get a grant to purchase a new one to kind of help us out with that,” Mayhew said.

He said that he appreciates everyone who gave donations that have assisted in purchasing new equipment along with the grant.

“We’re very grateful for it,” Mayhew said.

The Charlotte Court House Volunteer Fire Department has also been notified by the Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services that it has been awarded Rescue Squad Assistance State Funding for a $7,846 grant to purchase a utility vehicle (UTV) medical unit equipped with a rescue skid.

The Commonwealth Regional Council assisted both departments in applying for the grants.
