Westpoint Park in Drakes Branch recently saw the addition and installation of two new swing sets, bringing the park closer to publicly opening to the community.

According to Charlotte County Recreation Association Director James Gregory, the park installed two four-bay swing sets complete with infant swings recently.

He said the park now has four pieces of playground equipment, including the two new additions.

Concrete forming has been set for a basketball court, grass has been planted and is being maintained and a gravel parking lot is now present.

One of the new swing sets was donated by Drakes Branch Baptist Church.

“I’m so grateful to Drakes Branch Baptist Church for their generosity,” Gregory said. “Westpoint Park has been an ongoing effort and the project is made possible through generous donations and fundraisers to benefit the youth in our county.”

Westpoint Park was formed in 2014 when Gregory said the idea stemmed from a lack of extracurricular activities for the youth in the area.

The park is sponsored by the recreation association.

Since then, the organization has held events, such as bike rides and class reunions to raise money for the park.

The recreation association is funded through youth basketball games each season.

“It’s all private funds,” Gregory said of revenue for the association.

He said the park will be a welcome addition to the Town of Drakes Branch and could one day see special events held there.

“I want Westpoint Park to be a hub where individuals can go and find recreation,” said Gregory. “While there aren’t a lot of entertainment options for young people within the county, I’m hoping by opening opportunities, such as the park and youth sports, we can have a positive impact.”

Westpoint Park is located on West Point Stevens Road in Drakes Branch. For more information, contact Gregory at (434) 315-3644.
