After dominating the Conference 34 competition, Randolph-Henry High School’s varsity girls tennis team found a stronger challenge in Region 2A East, going out with a fight in the team, singles and doubles tournaments.

In the team tourney May 26, host East Rockingham High School edged the Lady Statesmen 5-4 in the semifinals.

“It was a hard loss, but we tried to focus on how well the team had done to make it to regionals this year,” R-H Coach Shannon Feinman said.

In singles play, R-H senior Meredith Feinman won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1, R-H senior Couper Webb won 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 at No. 2, R-H senior Helen Lin won 6-4, 0-6, 7-5 at No. 3, R-H’s Eliza Walker fell 2-6, 1-6 at No. 4, R-H’s McKenzie Sharpe fell 2-6, 0-6 at No. 5 and R-H’s Annie Sandridge fell 3-6, 2-6 at No. 6.

In doubles play, Feinman and Webb won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1, Lin and Walker fell 5-7, 3-6 at No. 2 and Sharpe and Sandridge fell 2-6, 2-6 at No. 3.

“As you can see from the results, our seniors continued to lead the way for us with composure and the ability to close out tough matches under pressure,” Coach Feinman said. “As the other players gain more experience in match play, that skill will come for them as well.”

In the singles tournament May 23 in Fishersville, Meredith Feinman and Webb fell in the quarterfinals to opponents from Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School.

In the doubles tournament May 30 in Fishersville, Feinman and Webb fell 6-3, 4-6, 4-6 in the quarterfinals to a team from Maggie Walker.

“We were very proud of the hard work the girls put into the season and are encouraged by the commitment of the returning players to play year-round to be strong for the beginning of the 2018 season,” Coach Feinman said.
