Lady Statesmen shorthanded

Difficulties continue for a Randolph-Henry High School varsity softball team that is riddled by injuries, but the resolve of its healthy players has strengthened.

Lady Statesmen Head Coach Amy Hamlett said her players are still working on coming together, but she added that they “are becoming a lot more aggressive at bat and on the field. They are determined, no matter the score, to continue to fight.”

This has been an encouraging sign of character as Hamlett said the team is now down to nine players, and its injured members have yet to return.

Prior to Tuesday’s scheduled road game against Amelia County High School, Randolph-Henry’s most recent game was Thursday against visiting Goochland High School, and it resulted in a 17-1 loss for the Lady Statesmen.

Kimberly Horsfall scored for R-H after Casey Arrington’s sacrifice bunt moved her and Hannah Pasciuta’s double brought her home.

Despite a narrow loss to visiting Buckingham County High School on April 21, “we played very well,” Hamlett said. “Although we did lose 4-3, the girls fought until the end. We scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.”

Illustrating the teamwork of the Lady Statesmen, Hamlett explained that Alexxis Spencer got on first via a sacrifice bunt. Horsfall moved Spencer to second with a line drive to left field.

“Leighan Payne had a beautiful sacrifice bunt to score two runs for us, (with) her ending up on third,” Hamlett said. “Leighan Payne then stole home, scoring the third run.”

Horsfall pitched that game, as well as Randolph-Henry’s two prior games.

On April 20, the Lady Statesmen fell 11-1 to host Central Lunenburg High School. Pasciuta produced a triple in the game.

In a 14-4 home loss to Chatham High School on April 18, Anna Grace Cary had a double, and Kelsi Letterman and Arrington added singles.

The Lady Statesmen (1-10) visited Amelia on Tuesday, they visit Cumberland High School on Thursday at 5 p.m. and they visit Goochland High School on Friday at 5 p.m.
