Randolph-Henry High School’s varsity girls tennis team stayed perfect in 2017 when it defeated host Appomattox County High School 8-1 on Thursday.

The victory takes the Lady Statesmen to 4-0 overall.

“The team played well against Appomattox in a very challenging environment,” Randolph-Henry Coach Shannon Feinman said. “There were many sporting events taking place right up against the tennis courts fences, including a track meet with multiple starting gun shots, softball practice, soccer practice, etc. I was pleased with the concentration the girls displayed.”

Feinman highlighted Couper Webb, R-H’s No. 2 singles player, for maintaining her composure and focus for her entire singles match, winning 8-0.

Feinman also praised Helen Lin at the No. 3 spot for being “able to make adjustments to her game in the middle of her match to pull away and win 8-5.”

In the single matches, Meredith Feinman won 8-2 at No. 1, Eliza Walker fell 8-1 at No. 4, McKenzie Sharpe won 8-5 at No. 5 and Annie Sandridge won 8-2 at No. 6.

In doubles play, Meredith Feinman and Webb won 8-0 at No. 1, Lin and Walker won 8-2 at No. 2 and Sharpe and Sandridge won 8-3 at No. 3.

Coach Feinman said Appomattox is quite athletic and plays a defensive game, making for long points and lots of ground strokes.

She said the match was “good preparation for us for the postseason in terms of concentration, consistency and patience.”
