The Barksdale Cancer Foundation will host its annual handbag bingo event at the Bacon District Fire Department in Wylliesburg on Sunday.
All proceeds from handbag bingo will benefit the foundation. Admission is $20 in advance or $25 at the door.
Doors open at 1 p.m. and the event will be held from 2-4 p.m.
According to Foundation President Wendy Lankford, this year will mark the eighth year the fundraising event has been held.
The event will include a variety of door prizes, concessions and side pockets along with the main event.
According to information provided by the foundation, the non-profit organization was first started in 1999 as an organization to help raise money for cancer patients in Charlotte County.
The Barksdale family, of Phenix, lost three family members in a four-year timespan to the disease.
“Seeing the suffering and anguish experienced during these trying years, the family decided it would like to memorialize their loved ones and at the same time help others in Charlotte County who were suffering due to the same illness,” cited information provided by the organization.
The Barksdale Cancer Foundation participates in several fundraisers throughout the year, including poker runs and food sales.
Additionally, many businesses and organizations donate their time and money to help the cause.
Independent Younique Consultant Virginia Marston has held makeup fundraisers in the past with proceeds for the foundation.
“I picked the Barksdale Cancer Foundation because I liked the fact that it helps cancer patients here in Charlotte County,” she said.
Over the years, the foundation has provided over 200 grants totaling $125,000 to patients in Charlotte County.
