Homeless count is Wednesday

The Southside Continuum of Care is planning to count individuals and/or families who are homeless.

“The Continuum of Care is asking for the community’s help with identifying individuals and families who are homeless in the area when they host a point-in-time count of the homeless on Wednesday from 6 p.m.-6 a.m.,” organizers said in a press release.

According to the release, members of Continuum of Care will go out in teams and target known spots for homeless people in Halifax, Charlotte, Mecklenburg and Brunswick counties. “The Continuum of Care will be contacting several churches and local non-profit organizations to enlist their help in finding those in need of shelter.”

The goal of the Continuum of Care is to reduce the number of individuals and families becoming homeless, reduce veteran/youth homelessness and to reduce the number of individuals and families returning to homelessness.

According to the release, in previous years in Halifax, several homeless people could be found underneath the Riverdale Bridge connecting Riverdale and downtown South Boston. “At this time, it has been reported that maybe one individual is living down there.”

Organizers ask anyone who is homeless, on the verge of homelessness or anyone who knows someone in need shelter to call (434) 446-6963.
