Nina Carwile St. John’s faith in God was strong and she joined her Lord on December 15, 2016. Nina was born in Charlotte County on January 19, 1920, the daughter of Walter Edward Carwile and Geneva Morris Carwile. She lived in Charlotte County most of her life, until she moved to Suffolk to be near her daughter.
Nina was a member of Oak View Presbyterian Church all her life and attended St. Andrew Presbyterian Church after moving to Suffolk. She was active in Presbyterian Women. Nina loved to volunteer after she came to Lake Prince Woods thirteen years ago. Her husband of 58 years, Roy J. St. John, brothers, Walter E. Carwile Jr., and Morris Proctor Carwile predeceased her.
She is survived by one daughter, Faye S. Mayberry and son-in-law, Ryland G. Mayberry of Suffolk; sisters-in-law, Nina C. Layne and Edna St. John; one brother-in-law, Robert J. Barden; and niece, Devone Carwile Ferrell. She had numerous nieces and nephews on her husband’s side of the family and Faye and Ryland’s great-nephew, Kenneth S. Deaner and many cherished friends especially Sammy Brown’s family, Dorthiea Price and Shirley Louk.
A graveside funeral service was held at Oak View Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Charlotte CH, on Monday, December 19 at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Leigh Gillis officiating.
The family suggests flowers or memorial donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. The family would like to extend its deepest gratitude to the caregivers at Lake Prince Woods for the many kindnesses shown. Thank you to Heartland Hospice Care for the past week.
The Browning-Duffer Funeral Home, Keysville, handled the arrangements.
