The Randolph-Henry High School junior varsity girls basketball team’s season got underway two weeks ago, and the Lady Statesmen earned their first victory Friday night against the visiting Lady Barons from Bluestone.

R-H led 4-0 at the end of the first quarter. Bluestone got on the scoreboard in the second with three quick points, but the Lady Statesmen went into the half with a 5-3 lead.

They came out firing in the third quarter, with Alexis Wilmoth getting two buckets and Anisha Marable draining the three. Randolph-Henry tightened its defense in the fourth, but so did Bluestone. Lillian Jubb got a three for the Lady Statesmen, and when the final buzzer sounded, they came away with a 17-8 victory.

Jubb, an eighth-grader, led the scoring with seven points, followed by Marable, a sophomore returning guard, with six points. Another returner, Alexis Wilmoth, rounded out the scoring with four points.

“In the two previous games (against Gretna and Central), the JV ladies have improved with each game,” said Head Coach Sandy Mayhew. “In the Central game, the ladies had a 1-point lead in the fourth but could not seal the victory. I am very proud of these ladies and how they are progressing this season considering we are very young.”

Cheyanne Newcomb, Marable, Dajah White and Wilmoth are the four returners from last year’s squad. New to the team and to basketball are sophomore Carletta Anderson and freshmen Brandy Hall and Kaniya Morris.  Rounding out the team is Jubb.

After hosting Goochland Tuesday, R-H visits Amelia on Friday and Cumberland on Tuesday.
