The Randolph-Henry High School cross country teams traveled to Nottoway High School on Oct. 12 for the last race before the James River District (JRD) Championships and came up with a win and a second-place finish.

At the meet, Nottoway, Buckingham and Bluestone provided plenty of competition for the Runnin’ Statesmen, and with much cooler temperatures to run in, both R-H teams looked for significant improvement over last month’s race at Nottoway.

The Lady Statesmen ran first, with  Nottoway winning, Buckingham finishing second and R-H placing a close third. The R-H girls were led by Alena Latysheva (seventh), Lindy Newcomb (10th) and Sarah Grissom (11th).

The second race saw an impressive performance by the R-H boys. Nasheim Pettus (first), Chris Nichols (second), Michael Nichols (fifth), John Walker (eighth) and John Wendelin (ninth) led the Runnin’ Statesmen to their second win of the season.

Both R-H teams will be traveling to Occoneechee State Park in Clarksville to compete in the JRD Championships on Wednesday.
