The Randolph-Henry High School varsity girls volleyball team opened the regular season in good fashion, winning two of their first three matches, with the two wins coming against James River District opponents.
After falling to Nelson County 3-0 on Aug. 29 despite a strong 25-22 showing in the first set, the Lady Statesmen rebounded the next night with a 25-13, 25-20, 25-13 win over host Central Lunenburg. Led by five aces each from junior outside hitter Anna-Grace Cary and junior outside hitter Annie Sandridge, Randolph-Henry amassed 20 aces in the match and got five kills from senior middle hitter Jakya Pettus.
The Lady Statesmen went on to defeat visiting Bluestone on Thursday, 25-20, 25-15, 25-19.
Junior setter Hannah Pascuita led the Randolph-Henry serving game with four aces, while Sandridge paced the offensive attack with nine kills. Pettus and junior middle hitter Kierra Jones added five kills apiece and Liya Stevenson chipped in four of her own.
“This was a good way to open the season,” Head Coach Shep Critzer said. “We defended and served well in all three matches, and I think the girls were pleased with the way that they controlled their side of the net on (Aug. 30) and Thursday. Our defense and attack seem to be improving each game, so the next few matches should be fun to see how they continue to grow.”
Randolph-Henry (2-1) hosted Goochland on Tuesday and visits Amelia on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and Cumberland on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 6:45 p.m.
