The Charlotte County Angels All-Star softball team went undefeated in the recent Dixie Youth Angels District 7 All-Star Tournament held in Halifax, claiming the championship and advancing to the state tournament.

The Charlotte girls played a good tight game consistently throughout the tournament, making good and effective plays at nearly every opportunity. It was an X-play tournament, which meant that the girls were allowed to steal bases whenever possible.

Charlotte County wrapped up the district title by defeating the Altavista All-Stars for the second time in the tourney.

The girls jumped ahead with a big lead to start with, but the next time Altavista was at bat, it managed to make considerable gains, putting Charlotte County in the position to need a comeback effort.

Charlotte County made the comeback happen, as Catherine Battle’s hard hit brought her teammates home. However, on her attempt to come in, she got out, bringing Altavista back on offense.

Altavista’s attempt to gain further runs was cut short by Charlotte County, both in the field and on the mound. Pitcher Marissa Dempsey was able to strike out six on the evening, and her teammates were able to take care of the rest.

On the second night of play for Charlotte County, the girls engineered a 14-4 victory, eliminating the Brookneal All-Stars from the tournament.

Ashley Noblin got the winning hit, while Dempsey threw five strikeouts. Her teammates kept Brookneal in check on defense and made additional outs.

Charlotte County started its run in the tourney against Altavista, winning 13-2. Dempsey, again, had five strikeouts, and helped account for another out at first, which was manned by Ashley Nelson.

The Charlotte County Angels will play in the Dixie Youth Angels State Tournament at Powhatan beginning July 15.
