The Randolph-Henry High School girls and boys track teams took five athletes to the Region 2A West Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 25 at Radford University and produced some highlights, including a state qualifier.
Nadya Pettus placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.06 seconds, advancing to the Group 1A and 2A Virginia High School League State Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at Radford.
Ryan Craighead competed in the 800-meter run and surpassed his personal best by three seconds in what turned out to be the last meet of his high school career.
His time of 2:18.56 helped him claim 13th place. “Ryan ended with a great effort against a very strong field,” Statesmen Track and Field Coach Joe Freeland said. “He has shown improvement throughout his career and once again displayed heart as a competitor.”
Kiera Dodd placed ninth in the discus throw with an 89-6 throw and 16th in the shot put with a 28-7 1/2 throw. Daisha White claimed 14th in both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs, finishing the former in seven minutes and 34.36 seconds and the latter in 17:13.20.
Chris Powell took 17th in the boys 200-meter dash with a time of 24.72 seconds, and Pettus placed 20th in the girls 200, finishing in 33.13 seconds.
“We are proud of these athletes and their accomplishments,” said Statesmen Coach Karen Osborne.
The Randolph-Henry boys team did not generate any points, but the Lady Statesmen produced five points and finished in 20th place out of 22 teams.
Giles High School’s girls team won the meet with 86 points, and Martinsville High School’s boys team won with 99.50 points.
