Lady Statesmen start season with wins

The 2016 Lady Statesmen varsity softball team opened their season at home against the Lady Barons of Bluestone and came away with an 8-1 win last week. Lindsey Kunath went the distance on the mound, giving up just two hits while striking out eight. At the plate, Randolph-Henry jumped out to a 3-0 lead after just one inning of play on four hits by Maggie Adams, Liz Devin, Cymirra Shuford and Dominque Dews.
R-H would not score again until the fifth inning when Kimmi Horsfall, Maggie Adams and Liz Devin had three straight hits, putting the home team up 5-1.
The Statesmen put the game away in the bottom of the sixth when Horsfall, Adams and Devin had three hits in a row for the second straight inning. R-H finished the game with 12 hits led by Adams and Devin with three each while Shuford and Horsfall had two each.
The Lady Statesmen traveled to Amelia on Thursday and bounced back with a 12-0 win. Kunath went the distance, giving up no runs and just four hits. R-H scored 12 runs on 14 hits with all nine starters with a hit. Shuford led the way getting three hits while Adams, Devin and Kate Powers had two hits each.
Coach Deborah Laine commented on how well the team has been hitting the ball, getting 39 hits in three games. The team has been led by Adams with nine, Shuford with six, and Devin and Dews with five each. Laine also commented on how well the defense looked, saying how solid she felt the team was at all nine positions. R-H will go into spring break with a 2-1 record and will return with two road games next week.
The team consists of 13 players this year. Returning seniors are Adams, Devin, Kunath, Taylor Johnson, Powers and Molly Rose. Horsfall is the only returning junior and is joined by new juniors Mackayla Bacon, Kendall Bowman, Dominque Dews, Shuford and Alexxis Spencer. Sophomore Casey Arrington is also a new addition to the Varsity Lady Statesmen.
