The Randolph-Henry High School junior varsity softball season began its regular season last week.
The team has 13 players this year. Returning from last year’s squad are Anna Grace Cary, Kelsi Letterman, Anna Pasciuta, Hannah Pasciuta and Hallie Watson. Tori Washington and Shelby Meyer, sophomores, are new to the squad this year. Freshmen making the team this year were Chelsey Aliff, Cheyanne Newcomb, Sydney Nichols and Sarah Wilmoth.
Two eighth-graders, Leighan Payne and Alyssa Rapole, also made the squad. Returning as coach for the JV Lady Statesmen is Brittany Bowman, and she is joined by Sandy Mayhew. Watson and Rapole will share duties on the mound with Cary completing the battery at catcher.
The Lady Statesmen won their season-opener at home against Central Lunenburg, 8-0. Next, they traveled to square off against neighboring Bluestone. After a shaky start, the ladies managed to come away with an 8-3 win over the Lady Barons.
The ladies will face two tough opponents on the road this week, Goochland and Amelia.
“Defensively, we have played solid so far, but need to eliminate numerous errors we are committing,” said Mayhew. “Also we need to get our bats swinging earlier in the games. But, being so early in the season this is to be expected. These ladies are working hard in practice each day and I’m expecting a good season from them.”
