First baby of New Year at Sentara

Jaliyah Nicole Smith, the first baby born at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital in 2016, is pictured with her mother, Erica Smith, who is also a New Year’s baby from more than two decades ago. Smith, a resident of Halifax, gave birth at Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital’s Family Birthing Center at 7:52 p.m. on Jan. 1. Jaliyah was born weighing 6 pounds and 4 ounces and measuring 20 inches long. She was delivered by Duc Trieu, M.D. Jaliyah’s father is Omar Barbour and her grandparents are Rozelle Smith-Younger, of Saxe, and Dwayne L. Younger, of Halifax. Jaliyah’s great grandparents are Annie Lois Younger, of Halifax, and Beatrice Smith, of Saxe. Erica and Jaliyah received a large diaper bag which included a wide variety of baby care items such as bath products, wipes, a blanket and car seat safety items.
