The Randolph-Henry High School JV boys basketball team won an exciting game against the Buckingham Knights on Tuesday, Dec. 8 with a final score of 44-42.

The Knights jumped out to an early lead, but the Statesmen were able to battle back by playing good defense. It was a back-and-forth game that came down to the final seconds. The Statesmen were up by two with three seconds left. Buckingham inbounded the ball, took a couple dribbles and pulled up for a two-point shot. While shooting, a foul was called as time expired, sending the Buckingham player to the line.

Fortunately for the Statesmen, the player was unable to hit either of the free throws and the Statesmen were able to walk out of the gym with a victory.

The JV Statesmen will return to the court on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when they host Cumberland High School.

The JV Boys Statesmen basketball team played a tough game against the Nottoway Cougars last Friday night. The score ended up being 48-39 in favor of the Cougars, but the game was close until the last couple minutes of the fourth quarter. The Statesmen were leading by 4 at halftime but Nottoway came out in the second half and played a tough man to man defense that really gave the Statesmen trouble. Even with the increased pressure, the Statesmen were neck and neck with the Cougars, thanks in large part to the 3-point shot. The team was 5-9 from 3-point range, shooting a little over 55 percent from beyond the arc. In the end, the Cougars were able to pull away with some clutch free throw shooting, but the Statesmen fought hard all the way to the end.

The team, now 2-2, looks to right the ship this coming Tuesday as they travel to Central of Lunenburg.
