On Saturday, Feb. 24, the Central High Museum commemorated African American History Month with a program at The Bluestone Harmony Center in Keysville. DJ Al Brogdon blessed the guests with worship music before the program began. The theme was “A Struggle:Holding On To Freedom” and the afternoon was reminiscent of Sunday morning worship. Christine Smith led the audience in remembering those who have gone on before paving the way for our hard fought freedoms. The guests in attendance were treated to various inspirational presentations of speeches that reminded us of what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks among others fought for-freedom with equal opportunities to succeed.

In addition, the soul stirring songs sung by Barbara La Prade who told us about the power of prayer, Jerry Haskins who sang “A Change Is Going To Come” and youth Aiden Eubanks captivated the audience with his performance of “Time To Make A Change”. 

The Confident Women Ministry’s skit “God Can Turn It Around” about the praying mother brought the theme home that whatever the situation, i. e. a wayward daughter that God can turn it around. Moreover, The Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club’s special presentation honoring Dr. Hezteine Foster, museum president as well as encouraging words from county officials and special guests closed out a celebration that reflected how Black History is American History. A fellowship meal was served afterwards.

Finally, this African American History celebration continues to stress the importance of continuing to focus on preserving our history for future generations. We have come so far but there is still so much more to do.
