KEYSVILLE – Charlotte County will join with other communities fundraising and fighting back against cancer on Saturday, June 3 during the annual Relay for Life event.

The Event will be held at Southside Virginia Community College in Keysville starting at 6 p.m. until dark.

According to Sr. Development Manager for Relay For Life of Charlotte County Erika Newberry, the event will kick off with a celebration of cancer survivors.

“We encourage citizens to invite friends and family currently living with cancer or survivors to attend and join in the celebration,” Newberry said. “Bring noise makers, pom-poms, anything you bring to a pep rally to cheer those survivors on.”

Newberry said all attendees of the event are asked to line the track during the survivor lap and cheer on our survivors.

“After the Survivor Lap, caregivers will be invited to join the survivors,” Newberry said. “A caregiver is a friend or family member that helped a person with cancer, regardless if they are still with us. It may even be a healthcare worker.”

At the end of the event when it gets dark a Luminaria Ceremony will be held to remember those lost to cancer and reflect on the journey of those who have survived.

Relay For Life is the world’s largest volunteer-based fundraising event.

For more than 36 years, communities across the world have come together to honor and remember loved ones and take action for lifesaving change. Set up for the American Cancer Society, each year more than 5,000 Relay For Life events take place in over twenty countries. Events are held in local communities, university campuses and in virtual campaigns.
