“Do we have a Godward attitude?” It’s a great question as we embark into our February.

In Colossians 4:2-4 we find Paul saying “Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving; Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.” His prayer is quite lovely and encouraging to us as Christ followers.

He is teaching us great things to pray for. Let us face facts. Most of the time we pray for what we want or need of. We pray for friends and family. For people to be healed from sickness and disease, but do we really pray for our commission? From Matthew 28, we know our commission is to reach people for Jesus Christ.

In our Scripture today Paul prays “…that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ…” Wow! You can do that? Of course you can ask for things to line up, so that God can use you to reach people for God’s kingdom. All through the years, I have encountered many Christ followers that will do their churchy duties but will never walk out of the four walls of a church building and do their commission.

Recently, I read a beautiful account of how a professor prayed this prayer all through her semester. The last few days of her semester students began to ask her what was her secret to always having joy? Can you tell us why you chose to Christianity over all these other religions? What a fantastic way to share the gospel of Jesus Christ. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have people see that in us and ask us those same types of questions!

I am a firm believer that when we pray and ask things according to God’s Word – which is his will – he will move on those prayers. What if this year we were very intentional in pursuing the things of God through the position of doing his commission? What if our prayers were more targeted and more frequented in the area of the ministry which God has called every single Christian Follower to do? What if we allowed God to use us in the unexpected and “not use to this” for the Great Commission?

This week may we be thankful we know the truth of Jesus Christ. May we be open to God using us in mighty and powerful ways beyond our routines and normal servitude ways.
